Wheel Strategy Tracker

Log each step of the wheel: sell puts, get assigned, sell calls, get called away. The tracker totals premium, computes your adjusted cost basis per share, and shows realized P&L. Data stays in your browser (localStorage) and is never uploaded.

How to use

  1. Choose an entry type, enter the ticker, date, strike, premium per share, contracts, and fees, then click Add entry.
  2. For assignments and called-away events, the strike is the price shares were bought or sold at (premium = 0).
  3. The summary updates automatically. Export a CSV backup now and then, because clearing browser data deletes the log.

Formulas explained

Net premium = Σ premiums received − Σ premiums paid to close Net cash flow = premiums − share purchases (strike × 100) + share sales − fees Adjusted cost basis / share = −(net cash flow) / shares held Realized P&L (no shares held) = net cash flow

Treating premium as a basis reduction is a tracking convention. Your broker and tax rules may treat premiums differently. For example, premiums from puts that are assigned adjust the share basis for tax purposes, while expired covered-call premiums are separate short-term gains.

Worked example Hypothetical

Hypothetical: sell a $45 put for $1.20 → assigned 100 shares at $45 → sell a $47 call for $0.90 → called away at $47. Premium = $210. Cost basis while holding = 45 − 1.20 − 0.90 ≈ $42.90 + fees. Final realized P&L = 210 + (47 − 45) × 100 − $1.30 fees = $408.70.

FAQ

Where is my data stored?

Only in your browser's localStorage on this device. Nothing is sent to MarketWrench. Clearing site data or using a different browser will not show it.

Can I import a CSV?

Not yet. Export is available for backups and spreadsheets.

How do I record rolling?

Record a "Buy to close" for the old option, then a new CSP or CC entry for the new one.

Wheel strategy tracker explained for beginners

What this tool does

It keeps a log of every cash-secured put, assignment, covered call and share sale in a "wheel" strategy, and totals the premium collected, your adjusted cost basis and realized profit by ticker. Entries are saved only in your browser.

What each input means
Entry type
What happened: you sold a put, got assigned shares, sold a call, had shares called away, or bought back an option.
Ticker
The stock symbol, such as SPY.
Date
When it happened.
Strike
The option's strike price.
Premium / share
Money received (or paid, for buy-backs) per share.
Contracts
Number of contracts. One contract is 100 shares.
Fees
Commissions or fees for that entry.
How to read the results

The summary shows total premium, shares held, adjusted cost basis (what you paid for the shares minus premium collected) and realized profit. A lower adjusted cost basis means the premiums have cushioned your purchase price.

A short worked example (hypothetical)

You sell a $95 put for $2 and are assigned 100 shares at $95. Then you sell a $100 call for $1.50 and the shares are called away at $100. Premium collected is $350, and the share gain is $500, so total profit is $850 before fees.
